🕯 Remembering the Coventry Blitz — 85 Years On 🕯
One night in November, 85 years ago tonight, the City of Coventry endured an unimaginable 11-hour bombardment — the single most concentrated attack on any British city during the Second World War.
Over 554 lives were lost.
Most of the city centre was destroyed.
More than 43,000 homes were obliterated.
Around 500 Luftwaffe aircraft descended upon the city, dropping 500 tonnes of high explosive, 30,000 incendiaries and landmines, in a raid chillingly codenamed “Moonlight Sonata.”
Tonight, on the 85th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz, we pause to remember.
We honour the victims, the survivors, and the extraordinary courage of those who rebuilt what had been shattered — raising Coventry from the ashes and shaping it into a City of Peace and Reconciliation.
Here at The Great Western, a building with its own long history, we are only a short journey from Coventry — close enough to feel the weight of its story, and proud to stand alongside our neighbours in remembrance.
