1️⃣ On this day in 1902…
The Great Western Railway introduced its first “City Class” locomotive — sleek, fast and famously reliable. The kind of engine that would’ve definitely approved of our GW cogs!
2️⃣ On this day in 1934…
GWR proudly set a new British speed record at 100mph with the iconic City of Truro. Proof the Great Western has always had a need for speed.
3️⃣ On this day in 1892…
Run it wide, boys — GWR completed its final broad-gauge to standard-gauge conversion. A massive engineering feat completed in a single weekend.
4️⃣ On this day in 1920…
GWR dining cars were hailed as the finest in Britain — white linens, silver cutlery and menus finer than most hotels. (We’re pretty sure our Station Masters Board would have made the cut.)
5️⃣ On this day in 1935…
GWR launched its “Holiday Line” posters — the iconic art-deco travel adverts of beaches, hills and golden sunsets… much like the ones over our own Great western pub
