🧠 10 Fascinating Great Western & Warwickshire Railway Facts
1️⃣ The Great Western Railway (GWR) was founded in 1833 — designed by the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel to be the most comfortable line in the world!
Nicknamed “God’s Wonderful Railway.”
2️⃣ Harbury Cutting, just up the line from us, was once the deepest man-made cutting in Europe when completed in the 1850s — all carved out by hand with pickaxes, shovels, and horses.
3️⃣ Brunel originally built the GWR with a broad gauge track (7 ft ¼ in) for extra smooth rides. It was later narrowed to match the rest of the country — but his dream of a “luxury line” lived on.
4️⃣ Leamington Spa Station opened in 1852 and became one of the GWR’s most elegant stops — its Art Deco style still turns heads today.
5️⃣ The Hatton Locks flight near Warwick — a stunning canal staircase — runs alongside the GWR route and became a favourite view from early steam trains.
6️⃣ The Great Western line through Deppers Bridge, Harbury & Warwickshire changed rural life forever — connecting farms, villages, and markets straight to London.
7️⃣ During WWII, Harbury Tunnel and nearby cuttings were used for concealed military transport — local rails carrying secret cargo! 🚂💂♂️
8️⃣ The GWR’s famous chocolate-and-cream carriages weren’t just for looks — the colours cleverly hid soot and smoke stains from the steam engines.
9️⃣ The Banbury-to-Birmingham route, just near us, was fondly known as “The Shakespeare Line” — linking Stratford-upon-Avon and the Bard’s homeland to the GWR mainline.
🔟 Brunel’s legacy lives on — modern Great Western Railway trains still run from London Paddington to the West Country today… a 190-year-old dream still steaming ahead.
