On this very day in 1825, the world changed forever with the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway — the very first public railway to carry passengers with steam locomotives. On 27th September 1825, crowds gathered, holidays were declared, and history quite literally rolled down the tracks.
Fast forward 200 years to today, and we’re raising a glass here at The Great Western, Deppers Bridge, in celebration of this incredible milestone. 🎉
Railways shaped communities, connected towns, and built industries — and they continue to inspire us every single day. Our own pub takes its name and spirit from this heritage, keeping the story of steam alive with warmth, laughter, and a touch of nostalgia.
