In 1846, the Great Western Railway carried out important locomotive trials during the famous Gauge Wars, comparing Brunel’s bold broad gauge with the emerging standard gauge. These tests shaped the future of Britain’s railways and reflected the GWR spirit — innovative, ambitious, and never afraid to do things differently.
