🍻 Did You Know… English Pub Trivia
1️⃣ The word “pub” comes from public house — meaning anyone could walk in and be served, unlike private clubs that required membership.
2️⃣ There are over 45,000 pubs in the UK today — but that’s down from nearly 70,000 in the 1980s.
3️⃣ Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham claims to be England’s oldest pub, dating back to 1189 AD — carved right into the rock below Nottingham Castle!
4️⃣ Pubs once served as post offices and courthouses. Many villages had no other meeting point, so pubs became true community centres.
5️⃣ Pub signs were originally for the illiterate. In medieval times, pictures (like a red lion or a crown) helped people identify a pub before most could read.
6️⃣ The Red Lion is the most common pub name in Britain — there are over 500 of them!
7️⃣ Women weren’t allowed to drink at the bar in many pubs until the 1970s!
